Overview

You’re a provider in the health and fitness industry, and have clients who are women. You’ve heard a lot of ‘buzz’ and have seen social media posts about the pelvic floor, the ‘core’, and a bunch of ‘dos’ and ‘dont's, and you don’t really know where to start. Maybe you’re an Athletic Therapist, Physiotherapist, Chiro, Osteo, Massage Therapist or Naturopathic Doctor, and you have clients who are curious about exercise and their pelvic health through pregnancy and menopause. Maybe you’re a Fitness Coach or Trainer and have clients asking about their ‘ab separation’ and how they heard that loaded activities like lifting heavy weights and jumping are ‘bad’ for their pelvic floor. Maybe you have bladder leaking or prolapse concerns yourself.

You know there are Pelvic Physios out there, but surely there is SOMETHING you can do for your clients (and yourself) without having to do an internal vaginal exam. (Spoiler - this is what this course is all about!)

Learning Objectives

In External Approaches to Pelvic Health: Education, Exercise, and Empowerment, we cover:

  • Pelvic Floor Anatomy
  • Urinary Incontinence (and how to manage it through to skipping and running)
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse (what is it, management options)
  • Diastasis Rectus Abdominus (myth-busting, assessment, and exercises included!)
  • Supporting your clients through pregnancy and postpartum changes, including exercise recommendations
  • Menopause - what it is, what it isn’t, and what you can do to THRIVE
  • Biopsychosocial approach to Pelvic Pain conditions
  • The importance of client-guided care approaches
  • How to collaborate and network with other healthcare providers, and when to refer to a specialist

The main goal is to introduce you to assessment and a movement-based treatment approach that can be integrated into your current approach for common pregnant, postpartum, and pelvic health concerns. The main topics will include Diastasis Rectus Abdominus, Pelvic Organ Prolapse, Urinary Incontinence, and how to guide your client through movement & exercise while managing these conditions throughout the lifespan.

By the end of the course, you will be confident in assessing diastasis rectus abdominus, and the pelvic floor through external palpation. You will build off your existing knowledge of exercise, movement, and lifestyle approaches to health with additional knowledge about the pelvic floor, core, and their related concerns. You will be able to offer accurate, up-to-date insight, education, and safe and appropriate movement-based treatment recommendations for your female clients regarding pelvic health concerns and common transitions throughout the lifespan (pregnancy, postnatal, & menopause).

Testimonials

"This course is a fantastic blend of practical strategies, a thorough review of evidence, and a comprehensive approach to pelvic health. Jenny and Ashley provoked thoughtful discussion and reflection on how to support patients from a client-centered perspective to achieve their goals and individualize care. The skills and strategies we learned can be applied immediately into practice. I strongly recommend this for NDs working with any stage of women’s health and/or athletes to gain confidence in their skills and stay up to date on the latest research relating to diastasis, pelvic pain, incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse."
- Dr. Amy Dobbie, Naturopathic Doctor

"Jenny and Ashley were very knowledgeable and up to date on the current research. As an orthopedic physiotherapist, this course provided me with strategies I could immediately incorporate into my practice for managing patients with pelvic health concerns."
-Alison Wiggers, Physiotherapist

"Very helpful in getting a better understanding of many aspects of pelvic health conditions. I was surprised to learn that a lot of what a pelvic health Physio does are external approaches which is something that many of us can also do!"
-Steacy Huff, Chiropractor, Certified Athletic Therapist

The instructors
Jenny Telfer-Crum
BScHK (Hons), MScPT

Jenny is an Educator and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist out of Ontario, Canada. Jenny is co-author and presenter of three courses: "External Approaches to Pelvic Health: Education, Exercise, Empowerment" with Ashley Burr, CAT(C) on Embodia and In-Person; "Pessaries: Clinical Integration and Management of POP/SUI" and "Clinical Update: SUI and POP Research and Management Review" with Cara McDougall, PT through Pelvic Health Solutions.

Women’s pelvic health has, unfortunately, been considered a taboo topic and has historically been overlooked in health education, our medical system, and our culture as a whole. This means that concerns about bladder leaking, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual pain or pelvic/low back pain have been overlooked or considered “normal” with aging or after having children. Although pelvic concerns are being talked about more on social media, this can also lead to conflicting messaging from a variety of sources that may leave female clients feeling more confused and unsure of what to do next.

Jenny's goal through these courses is to share current and practical information so that providers can affirm, empower and support their female clients throughout the lifespan. Jenny has been working as Senior Teaching Assistant with Antony Lo on his Female Athlete series of courses, as well as being a Teaching Assistant with Pelvic Health Solutions, since 2018.

Clinically, Jenny works collaboratively with people experiencing pelvic health concerns so that they can understand their bodies, stop worrying, and confidently progress towards their fitness or lifestyle goals. She strives to provide compassionate, inclusive, and trauma-informed Physiotherapy and Pessary care that revolves around her client’s goals and fits into their lifestyle.

Jenny's work with client's includes external and internal assessment, manual therapy, pessary use if indicated, and exercise prescription, as well as exploring other contributing factors with her clients such as their personal health history, stress management, sleep habits, foundations of nutrition, and movement preferences.

Jenny has always pursued various forms of exercise herself, from jogging to CrossFit, from yoga to belly dancing. Apart from being a completely average gym goer, she also enjoys reading fiction and spending time outdoors with her husband, Sho.

Ashley Burr
BSc.(KIN), CAT(C), Certified Athletic Therapist

Ashley has been working as a Certified Athletic Therapist at Arora Family Chiropractic in Winnipeg, Manitoba since 2014. After the birth of her son (2016), she gained a special interest in the pregnant and postnatal population and began expanding her knowledge and skillset in pelvic health. Ashley works with clients to guide them towards confidently reaching their pain, movement, and exercise goals.

Outside of the clinic, Ashley enjoys teaching and working various sporting events throughout the year. Ashley is co-author and presenter of ‘External Approaches to Pelvic Health: Education, Exercise, Empowerment’ with Jenny Telfer-Crum BSc (HK) MSc (PT), and the author and presenter of ‘Introduction to Myofascial Cupping’. She has been working as the Athletic Therapist with Kelvin High School Football since beginning her university practicum placements in 2010.

Growing up, Ashley experienced many injuries. This piqued her interest in movement and how the body works. She was heavily involved in swimming, softball, gymnastics, and army cadets. She enjoys running, spending time with her family, and coaching her son’s various sporting adventures.

As practitioners, we often will see a client for one concern, and they may note another area of concern that we can help with. It is no different with pelvic health. With this course, if a client is avoiding certain exercises because they leak or feel heaviness in their pelvic floor, you will be able to guide them through this!

Once you have completed the course, a certificate of completion (including learning hours and course information) will be generated. You can download this certificate at any time. To learn more about course certificates on Embodia please visit this guide.

This course focuses on pelvic health concerns for people with vaginas, either those who are born with female anatomy, or a trans woman after bottom-affirming surgery. We talk about a trauma-informed, client-guided care approach, which you can use with all your clients regardless of anatomical sex or gender identity. We talk at the end of the course about pelvic health considerations for male, trans, and non-binary clients, and provide broad ideas for how to work to create inclusive and brave spaces for anyone with pelvic health concerns, however, this is not the focus of this course. If you are looking for a Trans-focused course, we recommend you check out Introductory Pelvic Health Care for Trans and Gender Diverse People by Celeste Corkery, and Male Pelvic Health by Sandy Hilton and Sarah Haag here on Embodia.
