Overview

Physical therapists are on the front lines of concussion care, yet persistent myths and outdated practices continue to undermine patient outcomes. This course equips PTs and allied health professionals with the current clinical standards for managing both sport-related and non-sport-related mild traumatic brain injury.

Drawing on the updated Amsterdam consensus, participants will understand why concussion is best framed as a metabolic and inflammatory event rather than a structural injury — and why that distinction changes everything about how we assess, educate, and rehabilitate patients. With an estimated 1.2 million concussions occurring annually in Canada and nearly half resulting in persistent symptoms, the case for evidence-based, PT-led care has never been stronger.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and confidently debunk prevalent concussion myths still circulating in mainstream medical settings — including the requirement for loss of consciousness and the use of prolonged "dark room" rest protocols.

  2. Recognize acute yellow flags — such as poor sleep quality and early oculomotor dysfunction — that signal elevated risk for prolonged recovery timelines.

  3.  Apply the seven clinical concussion phenotype framework (physiologic, vestibular, ocular motor, affective, cognitive, migraine, and cervical) to guide targeted, individualized patient assessment and treatment planning.

Audience

This course is designed for physical therapists, physiotherapists, and allied healthcare professionals seeking to strengthen their clinical management of patients presenting with concussion symptoms — whether in acute, subacute, or persistent stages of recovery.

Why This Course Matters

The very first clinical interaction after a concussion can set a patient on a trajectory toward full recovery — or toward months of unnecessary suffering. When frontline providers offer outdated guidance (rest indefinitely, avoid screens, wait it out), they inadvertently delay rehabilitation, increase anxiety, and raise the risk of secondary complications like deconditioning and mood disorders.

This course addresses that gap head-on. You'll leave with a clear framework for early, active intervention — including sub-symptom threshold exercise protocols grounded in autonomic physiology — and the clinical confidence to lead a multidisciplinary concussion team. Because PTs are uniquely trained to assess and treat vestibular, ocular, cervical, and autonomic systems simultaneously, they are ideally positioned to lead this work. This course gives you the language, tools, and evidence to do exactly that.
